March 29, 1773 Chapter 15 C The Girardy Family - The Henry Family The parents of Marie Jeanne Girardy who married Paul Barre were Joseph Girardy and Marie Jeanne Henry. The name Girardy is found spelled Girard, Gi- rardet, Girardeau, but we are not sure of the origin of the family. In his memoirs written about 1752, Jean Francois Durucant, in Quarterly, Vol. 19, says: "Going to an assignment to the Yazoo Post in November of 1721, by way of Lake Pontchartrain, we rowed up a river for two leagues. Here was a landing with a few warehouses. There were only three settlers at this place. One on the right bank of the Bayou going up was a Canadian, named Joseph Girardy, his wife and his children, and a few Indian slaves. On the left bank was Sieur La Vigne and his family. He has a good planta- tion. The third was Sieur Dugue, a bachelor. One hun- dred steps farther are several warehouses for the merchandises sent from New Biloxi in this new settle- ment which they intended to start one league from Bayou St. John, near the St. Louis River ... We left the little village of New Orleans where there were only four or five scattered houses belonging to a few set- tlers." This account gives some idea of the primitive life of our early forebears. We know only through this that Joseph Girardy was a Canadian," and if he was, his name was probably Giradeau. There are several references on the Henry family into which he married. They owned a plantation on Bayou St. John near New Orleans for many years. Later they moved to Pointe Coupée. It is thought that Marie Jeanne Henry, Joseph Girardy's wife, was the sister of Nicolas Henry II, who served for years on the Superior Council as Royal Notary. She was the daugh- ter of Nicolas Henry I and Elizabeth Thomas Henry. Nicolas Henry and his wife had six children, the third, Marie Jeanne, being our ancestress. We find a record that on April 13, 1728, Sieur Chanfret, Director of the DuBuisson Concession, [second column of the text] granted his power of attorney to Sieur Nicolas Henry. This would indicate that Sieur Henry was connected with the Paris-DuVernay-DuBuisson grant, as were Jacques Roman and Antoine Patin I. It is not surprising that these families intermarried, since they all lived in the same general area, and were interested in the same enterprises. It is quite possible that they were friends or relatives prior to the settlement of this Concession. On June 10, 1729, Nicolas Henry I died. His widow, Elizabeth Thomas Henry was appointed guardian of their minor daughters, Marie Catherine and Marie Louise Henry. We believe that Nicolas Henry was Canadian, and that he was married and had a family before he came to Louisiana. We have the dates of birth of only two of his six children, Marie Francoise, born in 1723, and Francois, born in 1725. His daughter, Marie Jeanne, married Joseph Girardy. NICOLAS HENRY B.
