ARKANSAS CENSUS MADE 1749 Mrs. Leister S. Preslsy In 1749 Louis Xavier Martin de Lino Chalmette was Commandant at Arkansas and made a census of the Post and surrounding area. This is the first census of Arkansas that has been found. He was a relative of de Vaudreuil, the French Governor, and this census was among the Governor's papers that were aboard the "L'Alcide" when it was captured at sea by a British vessel in June, 1755. It is part of the Louden Papers and is now in the Henry S. Huntington Library, San Marcos, California. The paper is written in French and the following translation was made by Verne Vogt, Professor of French at Harding College. He was working from a microfilm copy and the old script is very hard to decipher. Some places were blurred and the exact word could not be determined. In some places they have been printed but marked with a question mark. In other places the word was so uncertain only a blank space was left. This item is reproduced by permission of the Henry E. ARKANSAS CENSUS MADE 1749
Mrs. Leister S. Preslsy
In 1749 Louis Xavier Martin de Lino Chalmette was Commandant at
Arkansas and made a census of the Post and surrounding area. This is
the first census of Arkansas that has been found. He was a relative of
de Vaudreuil, the French Governor, and this census was among the
Governor's papers that were aboard the "L'Alcide" when it was captured
at sea by a British vessel in June, 1755. It is part of the Louden
Papers and is now in the Henry S. Huntington Library, San Marcos,
California.
The paper is written in French and the following translation was
made by Verne Vogt, Professor of French at Harding College. He was
working from a microfilm copy and the old script is very hard to
decipher. Some places were blurred and the exact word could not be
determined. In some places they have been printed but marked with a
question mark. In other places the word was so uncertain only a blank space
was left.
