21 May 1977 FRANCOEUR in Arkansas....Chronology of Notes The earliest indication of residency in Arkansas located to date is 1742 as per this record shared by Alice Forsyth from Cathedral records (Funeral Register 1772-1790 - page 8)... "In this year of seventeen hundred and seventy-two and this 1742 third day of October, I the undersigned interred in the cemetery of the Parish, the remains of CATHERINE FRANCOEUR, a native of Arkansas, of the age of thirty years, and wife of PIERRE PERTHUIS, called la Geneury, she received the sacraments before her death, and in faith I have signed /s/ F. Ferdinand, Vicar" The 1749 Census by Arkansas Post Commandant from Vaudreuil Papers (LO 200) held 1749 by the Huntington Library, San Marcos, Calif.....On the White River, Bourgeois Francoeur with four engages (employees) (NOTE: Many of the following taken from ARKANSAS POST INVESTIGATIONS - Selective translations from Archives of the Indies, Seville, Spain, Cuban papers, Legajo 107, shared with me by the Supt. of the Arkansas Post National Memorial. Items from this source will be indicated Ibid. followed by page number.) 1768 Census of Inhabitants of Ark. Post on 2 Dec 1768 by Alexander DeClouet, Commd't... Among others.... WIDOW FRANCOEUR with 3 sons, 6 daughters and 2 negro boys 1768 Monxharvoux, interpreter (included as he later married one of the daughters) LaJanvry - his wife (Note: no doubt the FRANCOEUR lady above whose name is found in all other references as MARIE JEANNE or MARIA JUANA or JUANA rather than Catherine); children - 4 boys, 1 girl; 3 negro men, 1 negro woman, 1 negritte. (NOTE: Not being versed in French, I mentally refer to this gentlemen as "Mr. January".. .the variant spellings of this "dit" for this PIERRE PERTHUIS are many and I have no idea of the correct pronunciation so I made up my own.) 16 Jan 1770 (Ibid: p 214) FRANCOEUR to Demazellieres, Commd't. at Ark. Post.... Statement that Tounoir, merchant owes him 954# for salted meat bought at Point Coupee, The Chevalier Clouet can witness this, since he had the promissory note since he wanted to do what was possible to get paid. Demazallieres adds X for signature. Since the note is in the hand of Clouet he has sent this papers 1770 to Gen. Gov. of La. (Ibid: p 215-216) The beginning of this ltr. is missing hence no date... Demazellieres, probably to General. States that JANOT FRANCOEUR will pay Monsieur Larrigne (probably LaVigne who was storekeeper at Post per 1768 census... an aside by DJC) only if ordered by justice for the merchandise purchased in 1766. These people the FRANCOEUR are good people who are easily cheated. 16 Feb 1770 - Marriage Contract - Louis Chauvin, son of Louis Chauvin and Angelique Perthuys, and MARIANNE FRANCOEUR, native of Arkansas, daughter of JOSEPH FRANCOEUR, mother's name unknown. (LAHQ Vol 6, p 313; Belting "Kaskaskia Unde the French Regime", p 87) 20 May 1770 - (Ibid: p 130) - Demazillieres from Arkansas - Permission granted to M. Marsero to marry one of the girls of Mrs. Francoeur at Punda Contada. No Date (Ibid: p 135 - The River Hunters have been ordered to return to the fort..... 26 May 1770 (Ibid: 1 189.... .given permission to M. Monsaveau to go down to Cut Point in order to get married to one of the daughters of Mde FRANCOEUR. This will keep that boy at the Post....." (Note: the translator apparently was unfamiliar with the names and had trouble deciphering.)
