Collected by Mary Celestia Parler Transcribed by Nathaniel Lucy Sung by Clara Phillips Dover, Arkansas April 4, 1954 Reel 197, Item 3 Jack was Quite a Young Man Jack was a quite a youngster Happy and gay was he Loving his time with a playmate So cheerfully full of glee One day as they were playing Maybe just for fun Threw her head into the river And unto the house did it run Jack looked at her one moment And at her head sinking fast Jerked off his coat in a flurry And into the water he dashed Then came for baby sighing There Jack with her hand Don’t cry little dear I’ll do it all over All for your sweet heart said Jack Oh for the love of a dear little girl Oh for the smile that would set a brighter world When a man gives his life and all joy in this world All for the love of a girl Jack threw - - - Tall and handsome was he Still loving you some little playmate She was his fair bride to be - - - loved to tease him As the days gone by Then alas he thought he would leave her And sail - - - tide She never thought him in earnest She never dreamed he would come If he do - - - another Somewhere to love me I knowJack join the ships that evening And all for the her love he did earn Her name is - - - Jack’s ship has never returned
