15 July 1978 Dear Dr Hyatt: I regret more than I can say that commitments in Europe will make it impossible for me to attend the birthday celebration for Brooks Hays on August 8. Few Americans have done so much to further the cause of tolerances, understanding and fellowship among diverse races and creeds; and no one in our time has done it with such delicious wit and sagacious humor. Brooks Hays is an exemplary American. His only trouble, so far as I can see, is that, when he claims to be 80, he is obviously telling one of his Arkansas tall tales. Please give Brooks and Marion Hays the admiring love of their old friends Arthur and Alexandra Schlesinger Dr. David Hyatt National Conference of Christians and Jews
