Dr. Philo Hooper (b.1833-d.1902) was a founder and first dean of the UAMS College of Medicine from 1879 to 1886. The medical school in Little Rock was known as the Medical Department of the Arkansas Industrial University (in Fayetteville) and Dr. Hooper's official title was President of the Medical Faculty. In 1886, he resigned his position as faculty president to become the second Medical Superintendent of the Arkansas State Lunatic Asylum in Little Rock, forerunner of the Arkansas State [Psychiatric] Hospital. Dr. Hooper also served as the first President of the Arkansas Medical Association, a precursor to the Arkansas State Medical Society.
