James L. Dennis, M.D. (b.1913-d.2006) served as the first Chancellor of UAMS from 1975 to March 1979 and as UAMS Vice President for Health Sciences from September 1, 1970 to 1975. During this time, the medical school in Little Rock was known as the University of Arkansas School of Medicine (1918-1975) and the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Campus or UAMSC (1975-1980). From 1962 to 1964, Dr. Dennis was Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean of the UAMS College of Medicine. Dr. Dennis retired as UAMS Chancellor in March 1979 but continued as Professor of Pediatrics until his full retirement in 1981 as Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics.
