The surrey with the fringe on top.
My Grandpa was one of the first two settlers down at De Queen, Arkansas. After they got pretty well settled around there--he had the livery stable there. He owned a beautiful rig with a pair of horses that pulled the thing—had a fringe on top. This was the first time I ever heard of the surrey with the fringe on top. One day he went to church and some of the rival boys cut the fringe off the surrey. So Grandpa looked out the window and saw what they was doin'. He rushed out there and there was a hell of a fight about then. So 'fore it was over it broke up church and Grandpa got his finger cut clear off—one of the guys bit it off, rather. As far as I know that's the first reference ever made to the surrey with the fringe on top.
