Reel 297, Item 2
John Hardy was a desperate man,
Wore a pistol night and day,
He shot a man in the shining game,
Now watch John Hardy shut away, poor boy,
Now watch John Hardy shut away.
John Hardy went to the big stone gate,
But he didn't go there to stay,
When up stepped a man with a gun in his hand, John Hardy, come and go along with me, poor boy,
John Hardy, come and go along with me.
He took John Hardy back to Shiloh town,
Where the murder and the crime was done,
Where he shot the man in the shining game,
John Hardy, you're sure to be hung, poor boy,
John Hardy, you're sure to be hung.
They sent for his father and mother too,
His father for to go his bail,
The jailer said you're not able to go,
And he shoved John Hardy back in jail, poor boy, He shoved John Hardy back in jail.
He's been out East, he's been out West,
He's been this whole world round,
He's been to the river and he's been baptised But he's now to his hole in the ground, poor boy, He's now to his hole in the ground.
