The Old Gospel Ship
I have good news to bring and that is why I sing,
And my joy with you I'll share,
I'm going to take a trip upon a gospel ship And go traveling through the air.
Oh, I can scarcely wait; I know I'll not be late,
For I'll spend the time in prayer,
So when my ship comes in, I'll leave this land of sin And go traveling through the air.
Well, I'm going to take a trip right on a gospel ship, Going 'way beyond the sky,
I'm going to shout and sing until the Heavens ring, When I'm bidding this world good-bye.
I'm going to take a ride right by my Saviour's side, And I shall not have a care;
I'll leave my burdens here, yes every sigh and tear, While I go traveling through the air.
Beyond the sun and moon, I shall be traveling soon,
Where the day is always fair,
Way past the fartherest star to Heaven's gates afar,
Just a-traveling through the air.
If you're ashamed of me, you hadn't ought to be, fee, you'd better have a care;
If too much fault you find, you'll sure be left behind,
While I go traveling through the air.The Old Gospel Ship continued
Now I do much suspect this crowd is false elect,
For there is just a chosen few
Who are going on that trip on that old gospel ship;
They are tested, tried, and true.
Now all the prophets there in Heaven's band so fair,
All the Saints beyond the sea,
Where all the angels dwell, They'll hear the old ship's bell, And be traveling too with me.
Oh, I'll see Moses there, ariding through the air,
When I take my farewell trip,
And Father Abraham, right close to where I am,
In that big gospel ship.
Joshua, Samuel, Ruth, who loved the blessed truth,
We shall see when we get there.
Oh, won't it all be grand to join that mighty band,
And go traveling through the air.
We cannot miss the track, and we're not coming back,
When we're once caught away;
So, if you want to go, just drop your load below,
When we're gone, we're gone to stay.
Suppose we make a date right near the pearly gate,
Where we'll talk these old times o’er,
When we complete this trip in that old gospel ship As it touches Heaven's band.
Chorus:The Old Gospel Ship
Mrs. E.N. Campbell got this song from Brother Rouse about twenty-eight years ago. He composed it, and she first heard it when he was at Haze Chapel. He sang it and hie daughter picked the guitar.
An arrangement by Alphus LeFevre was copyrighted in 1939 by the Tennessee Music and printing Co. It has the first verse divided into two verses and the last four lines of the second verse as a third verse. The chorus is the first four lines of the chorus I have. The tune is the same.
