M.C.P.: Can you stop people from bleeding?
Mary Briscoe: I can.... I failed oncet er twice
M.C.P.: Is that a secret?
Mary B.: Yes, ther's a certain verse in the Bible, and you
say that, y'know, and say the other three times. I have
failed once er twicet, but I don't know whether I'uz s'posed
not to learn my kinfolks er not. And I'd wrote it down for
one boy, ane he'uz the one stuck it up in the clock.... and
anybody could read it, y'know.... .and the next time I
tried to stop it I couldn't stop it at all. But I can
stop it; I've stopped it on several horses that'ad run in.....
and cut ther legs nearly off.
Well, I have to call ther names and ther age
MCP: How many people can you tell?
Mary B.: I don't know. Never did say. There'uz a young man
learnt it to me when I'uz about seventeen yers old, fore I'uz
married, and he'uz a-goin with me and he said I'll learn you
how to stop that bleedin. And they'uz a boy egg-huntin'
and his nose jis' bleedin', and I said What's his name and
age, I'll stop that. He said ...... d'reckly. He didn't want
me to do anything.;.. And I just went ahead sayin' it, I knowed
what his name was, but I didn't know how old he was. Befo' he
got down to the end of it, hit'ad stopped.
