JAR: What was it the man said to you the first year that
you taught school?
LBS: Well, after I finished the year— I taught my first year
at Elm Springs Academy— (I taught the little folks). . . .
JAR: How old were you?
LBS: I was between sixteen and seventeen, and I remember one day
I was running up the hill. I lived near and I was always
running. I met a book agent who was afoot, and he said,
"Little girl, if you don't hurry you are going to be late."
And I don't know why I did it, but I stiffened up and
put my hand on my hip and said. . . .
