MOTHER, THE QUEEN OF MY HEART
I had a home down in Texas, down where the bluebonnets grew;
I had the fondest old mother; how happy we were, just we two.
One day the angels called her, a debt we a l l have to pay;
She called me close to her bedside, and these words to me
she did say:
"Son, don't start gambling and drinking; promise you'll
always go straight;"
Many years have gone by since that promise, that promise
for I broke, I must say.
I started gambling for pastime, until I was just l i k e them a ll
I bet a l l my clothes and my money, not dreaming that I 'd
ever f a l l .
One day I bet a l l my money; nothing was l e f t to be seen;
One card was needed to beat them, and that card was the queen.
The cards we rolled up round the table; each man took a card
on the draw;
I drew the card that was needed, and I turned i t , and here's
what I saw;
I saw my mother's picture; somehow she seemed to say,
"Son, you have broken your promise;" I threw those cards away.
My winnings I gave to the newsboy; I saw I was wrong from
But I'll never forget that promise to Mother, the queen or
