Reel 406, Item 2
"Once in the days of long ago, there was a church got'um a new minister. He's a dutchman. In those days, they uh, had only one hymn book and,uh, the minister would read the first ... line and then the audience would sing it. People would sing it.
Then, he'd read the next line and they'd sing it and so on.
All the songs to the same tune. So, this minister came in and he picked up the hymn book and the light was kinda poor and he couldn't see very well. So, he said:
Minister: "Mine eyes are veek, dis light is dim."
So audience started singing: "Mine eyes are weak, this light is dim." Minister: "I scarce can see to read this hymn."
Audience: "I scarce can see to read this hymn."
Minister by that time noticed what they were doing and said:
"I think the devil's in you all. Dot was no hymn to sing at all." And they sang it. "I think the devil's in you all, dot was no hymn to sing at all."
And the minister was flabbergasted by then. He said,"You are dismissed; you may go home."
